Every child a reader
Every child a reader now, and for the rest of their lives
In every subject, reading is recognised as the cornerstone to developing skills, knowledge and aspirations. We believe that for children to be truly engaged as readers, and in turn become life-long readers, they must have the background knowledge to empathise and connect to the story; to be immersed in a rich and diverse range of genres and to learn the vocabulary which research dictates will give our children the future success they deserve.
Reading is championed by every staff member in our school, and every book selected with our children is purposeful and well-pitched to their needs. Staff receive regular training and use research based approaches to teach reading. The school is currently working with the English Hub to support the development of phonics and reading throughout the school. Through accurate assessment and assigning a band of books all pupils are given appropriate challenge. The primary goal is to develop phonetically sound fluent readers. The ability to read will provide pupils with a vehicle to access knowledge from a variety of sources, write for purpose and become a lifelong learner. Leaving The Lancaster School with a passion for reading and prepared for the next stage of their education.
